If you've never had bed bugs in your home, you probably don't spend a lot of time thinking about these bugs. And while that is understandable and okay, it may not be that wise. If you spend a little time thinking about bed bugs and bed bug control now, you won't have to spend a lot of time getting rid of the bugs later on. Here are some preventative measures you can take to keep bed bugs out of your home.

Don't buy used furniture

Yes, buying used furniture can save you money — until you find out the furniture was riddled with bed bugs, and then you have to spend hundreds on bed bug removal. The only time you should buy used furniture is if it is being sold by a reputable furniture store that has the furniture professionally cleaned and treated for bed bugs before reselling it. Don't buy things from thrift stores or individuals selling furniture online.

Check for bed bugs before staying somewhere

People often assume that only cheap hotels get bed bugs, but bed bugs are just as happy to live in a clean, pristine hotel room. So no matter where you stay, always check for bed bugs as soon as you arrive and before you bring any of your own items into the room. How do you check for bed bugs? Just fling back the sheets! Do it quickly so you spot some bugs before they have a chance to scurry away. Also, look along the mattress seams and between the mattress and headboard. If you do see bed bugs, do not stay there.

Wash your laundry immediately upon returning home

Since it is possible to stay in a hotel or a friend's house with bed bugs and not realize it, you should launder your clothing as soon as you come home. Use hot water, which will kill any bed bugs or bed bug eggs that might be present. You should also dry your clothing in the clothes dryer on high heat. When it comes to your shoes, just tumble them in the dryer for 10 minutes or so before bringing them into your home.

Hopefully, with these control measures, you can prevent your home from becoming infested with bed bugs. Talk to a bed bug control company to learn more about these bugs and how to keep them away — and call immediately if you think you do have bed bugs in your home.
